Chorlton man to cycle 60 miles on six foot high bike
Press Release Posted 15 June 2010
David Phillipson
A man from Chorlton will have a good view of the road ahead when
he takes part in the annual Manchester to Blackpool bike ride on
Sunday 4th July.
David Phillipson, 45, will embark on the 60 mile challenge using
his unique home-made bike, which is six feet tall, to raise money
for The Christie. Married to wife Amanda, the driving instructor
got the idea for his creation after seeing a similar one in
Bristol.
He said; "The bike's just great and I've had so much fun using
it. It has no gears so riding uphill is interesting to say the
least and getting on and off can be difficult!
"I'm not quite sure how I'm going to go on amongst the thousands
of other cyclists on route to Blackpool but I'll give it my best
shot. I'll probably be the first to see Blackpool Tower too since
I'm so high up!"
Starting from the iconic home of Manchester United at Old
Trafford, the ride takes participants along country lanes to the
finish at Blackpool's Mirror Ball on the South Promenade, where
they get to enjoy a barbecue and live music.
David added; "Living in Chorlton, I'm fully aware of the amazing
and important work that's carried out at The Christie so I hope to
raise as much money as possible. If anyone can support me visit
www.justgiving.co.uk/chorltontallbike"
Sporting events officer at the Christie charity, Marco Giannini,
said; "I've never seen a bike like this before and I've certainly
never seen any fundraisers get to Blackpool in such a way! We'll
look forward to greeting him towering over everyone when he reaches
the finish line.
"Money David raises will help pay for ground-breaking research,
vital equipment, new building developments and all those extra
services that are so important for patients such as counselling and
complementary therapies.
"Last year over 2,000 people donned their royal blue Christie
t-shirts in support of our cause and this year's event promises to
be just as fantastic, so we look forward to seeing everyone
then!"
If you want to join David in this event, registration is still
open. Please visit www.bike-events.com, where you will be able to
register online. Please ensure that when registering you tick the
Christie box if you wish to take part for our cause.
