Daredevil mum Sue Moss is preparing for a 200ft abseil in aid of
The Christie's new radiotherapy centre being built at Salford
Royal.
Sue, 52, who is PA to the principal at Oasis Academy MediaCityUK
in Salford, has signed up for the 60 metre drop down Baitings Dam
in Yorkshire on Sunday 12th September.
Last year Sue, who is married with two grown up children,
completed her first tandem skydive and raised £1,788 for The
Christie, one of Europe's leading cancer centres.
She said; "When my colleague was told she had breast cancer in
January 2008, I was so impressed and inspired by the way she
handled her diagnosis I felt compelled to raise money for The
Christie where she was treated.
"When I decided to do the skydive my children were stunned, it
was totally out of my comfort zone.
"Now my colleague is recovering well and has recently got
married, I thought I would set myself another challenge - to raise
funds for The Christie radiotherapy centre at Salford Royal, which
is just down the road from where I live.
"I recently did a practice abseil and now I'm really looking
forward to the real thing. Even if I'd have been terrified I would
still do it."
The Christie charity joined forces with the Salford Advertiser
newspaper to help raise £250,000 towards the new £17million
Christie radiotherapy centre being built at Salford Royal. The
current appeal total stands at more than £110,000.
Sue added; "I think this new radiotherapy centre is vital
because cancer patients from Salford, Wigan and Bolton will be
treated closer to home which is so important, particularly if
feeling unwell."
Sporting events assistant at the Christie charity, Catherine
Flannigan, said; "The best of luck to Sue for her abseil challenge.
We know she has a great head for heights and we are delighted she
continues to raise money for our radiotherapy centre in
Salford."
The radiotherapy centre will be the second in a network of
centres where cancer patients from Salford, Wigan and Bolton will
be able to access first class radiotherapy treatments from Christie
experts, but much closer to home. The first radiotherapy centre
opened in Oldham in March 2010.
As well as treating patients for the most common cancers like
breast, bowel and lung, this special development will also be a
national centre of excellence for treating brain conditions. It
will be equipped to deliver stereotactic radiosurgery, a highly
specialised neurosurgical technique for brain cancers - making it
one of only a handful of such centres in the UK. Currently patients
from Greater Manchester have to travel to Sheffield for this
treatment.
