Stars from the sporting and television world gathered recently
for the second Norton Barrie Classic golf tournament in memory of a
prestigious Greater Manchester businessman.
Former Manchester United players Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and
Frank Stapleton were among the stars who turned out in memory of
Barrie Norton, founder and owner of the designer menswear store
Norton Barrie, who died aged 61 after a battle with cancer.
Coronation Street actors Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone, and
Lucien Laviscount, who played Ben, were also part of a team who
battled it out on the greens at Northenden Golf Club in south
Manchester.
Barrie had shops in Wilmslow, Warrington and Bolton which were
hugely popular with professional footballers. Mr Norton's son Blake
organised the event to raise money for the specialist cancer centre
The Christie where his dad was treated.
Blake said; "It was a superb day and a real team effort, so a
huge thank you to everyone who helped me organise the second Norton
Barrie Classic golf day. Thank you to everyone who took part and
turned out in memory of my dad. Most importantly we raised more
than £5,000 for The Christie so we are delighted."
On the day there were 180 players who also included ex-Hull City
manager Phil Brown, former Manchester City manager Brian Haughton
and former Newcastle and Everton star Steve Watson. Sky Sports
journalists were interviewing players live throughout the day.
Golfers were treated to complimentary refreshments from the
restaurant and bar 'Gusto' on the 9th hole, along with massages by
luxury cosmetic brand Babor. Every golfer was required to wear a
red Lyle & Scott polo shirt for the day or make a donation to
the Christie charity. Amongst the donors was former Manchester City
player Gary Owen who refused to wear red so made a large donation
to charity.
Fantastic prizes were up for grabs on the different golf holes
including a made-to-measure suit worth over £2,000 by Nicky
Wallace, a spa day kindly donated by Lion Quays Health Spa, gift
vouchers for the Cheshire-based jewellers Cottrills, a jaguar for
the weekend kindly donated by Royles Jaguar, a 42 inch Bang &
Olufsen TV and a four-day holiday on a golf resort in Portugal.
Winners received stylish trophies, fabulous Hugo Boss golf bags,
golf shoes and putters.
Community fundraising officer at the Christie charity, Toni
Kennedy, said; "Building on the success of last year's classic, I
am delighted that this golfing tournament has once again proved to
be such a popular event.
"We are so grateful to Blake and everyone who took time of out
their busy schedules to play in memory of a special man and help
raise money for the Christie charity."
