reunion.
A group of telephonists who worked together in the 1960s have
taken a trip down memory lane to raise money for The Christie.
Pauline Stevenson, 63, organised a charity reunion at her home
in Thornton Cleveleys to thank staff at the Manchester-based
leading cancer centre for the care she has received since being
diagnosed with cancer.
She said; "There was a brilliant gang of us who used to work
together at Blackburn Telephone Exchange so I thought what a
brilliant way to raise money - get everyone together and reminisce
about the good old days!
"We had a great day, nine of my former work colleagues and seven
other friends came along so we had a lot of catching up to
do! I organised a buffet lunch, we had a raffle and we
managed to raise £300."
Married to husband Adrian, the mother of two who has four
grandchildren was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2002. She
underwent her first operation in 2002, six weeks before her
daughter's wedding and still has regular check ups.
She added; "I remember that time very clearly - I was even
writing wedding invitations in my hospital bed! But I made it
to wedding and the care I received and continue to receive at The
Christie is fantastic. I couldn't fault a thing and I'm
feeling extremely positive for the future.
"That's why I wanted to raise money for The Christie. I
know that every penny raised will be valued and go directly to
where it's needed most."
Pauline organised her fundraising event as part of the Christie
charity's new 'Ladies Lunch' series that took place throughout
June. Women from across the North West were encouraged to
host lunchtime events to raise money to help cancer patients.
Miglio Designer Jewellery kindly sponsored the month-long
fundraising initiative.
Community fundraising officer at the Christie charity, Toni
Kennedy, said; "Pauline's idea to raise money was absolutely lovely
and perfectly encapsulated the Theme of our 'Ladies Lunch'
month. I bet the chatting didn't stop all day!
"Added to that she raised a brilliant sum of money that will go
towards paying for things like vital research, new medical
equipment and extra services for our patients such as counselling
and complementary therapies.
