Recognising your lasting legacy

Christie Supporter's Seminars are part of the Lady Margaret Holt Society - an organisation set up to provide a forum for old and new supporters who may be thinking of leaving something in their will to The Christie.

Money received from bequests is a very valuable source of income for The Christie. Many of the important projects underway rely on the generosity of kind-hearted people who had the foresight to include a donation to us in their will. In our last financial year, we received £5.9 million in legacies which has all gone towards research and treatment at The Christie, bringing real hope to those affected by cancer.

Much of The Christie's success in the battle against cancer has been built on legacies. Half of the first £10,000 needed to set up the first Cancer Pavilion and Home in Manchester in 1892 came from the estate of Mr Daniel Proctor. The Home was built on land left to Owen's College by the Whitworth estate.

The Holt family, founders of Manchester brewers Joseph Holt Ltd, became generous benefactors of the Hospital in the early years of the 20th century. In 1914 Sir Edward Holt senior helped raise funds to purchase radium for the Manchester and District Radium Institute, eventually named the Holt Radium Institute in his honour, The family tradition was continued by his son, Sir Edward Holt junior, whose wife, Lady Margaret Holt, chaired Christie's Women's Auxiliary Committee, later the Women's Trust Fund, from 1939-1977 and remained as its President until 1988. When Lady Holt died in 1997 she bequeathed her estate to The Christie, a legacy of over £8 million.
