Carley Stenson, currently starring as Princess Fiona in the West End production of Shrek and former Hollyoaks actress, said:

'I have friends and family who have been treated at The Christie as I come from Wigan. The Christie is an amazing place that treats thousands of people from the North West, so it's really important that we get involved where we can. I would love everyone to get involved in Christie's Month this October."

"Last year's event raised thousands of pounds to help patients and this year there are lots of opportunities for you to join in with Christie's month events or host your own. Please get involved in anyway you can to help The Christie continue its fantastic work."

Bucket collecting tips

Here are 10 top tips on bucket collecting by one of our expert collectors Dominic Richards:

  1. Look at people to encourage eye contact
  2. Ask them if they have any spare change for The Christie to help cancer patients.
  3. Hold your bucket so it's easy for people see it and to throw a donation in. On my first collection I just held it by my side, I soon realised holding it out in front of me made a big difference
  4. As people are giving a donation, chat to them and ask them about their day - People will really appreciate you taking time to talk.
  5. Empathise with them if they have a story to tell.
  6. Collect in pairs and not in a group - I once came across a group of 10 collecting all stood in a line across a narrow street it was very intimidating and I could see people trying to avoid them.
  7. Don't shake your bucket, it can be thought of as begging - plus it's illegal!
  8. Choose your locations wisely - If you stand in a place where people already have their money out they are more likely to drop in a  few coins.
  9. Enjoy this experience and keep thinking of the worthy cause your efforts support
  10. Finally, the one important thing is that you have to be liked by the people giving. So give a big friendly smile

Cancerversary - The BallOpen

Rounding off Christie's Month on Saturday 27th October, former patient Andy Smith will celebrate his one year 'cancerversary' by hosting 'The Ball' at Manchester's Palace Hotel. Andy was diagnosed with stage II testicular cancer in 2011 and was subsequently treated at The Christie, undergoing surgery and BEP chemotherapy. Andy got the all clear in late October and along with his partner Sophie, has since embarked on a year of fundraising for The Christie.

'While being treated at The Christie, Sophie and I were completely overwhelmed by the support, care and kindness of all the staff. It's a special place that we hold dear to our hearts and now that I am fixed, we want to pay back by fundraising and spreading the word of the fantastic work they do.'

Andy, along with friends and family, has taken part in The Old Trafford Zip Slide, The Manchester 10K, Manchester-Blackpool Bike Ride, Three Peaks Challenge and The Great North Run.

"The Ball' is an evening to celebrate and thank all of the people who have taken part in these events with me or kindly donated.'

Including a 3 course meal and wine, disco and a variety of fundraising activities, the evening will also feature guest speaker and fellow Christie patient, Mark Halsey (premiership referee). If you would like to attend 'The Ball', please contact Andy by email at andy@ajsmusic.co.uk

  • Tickets priced at £40 per person.
