How we are governed

The Christie charity supports the development of cancer prevention, treatment, research and education through investment in staff, equipment, facilities and other support services. We do this by making grants to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, and, occasionally to other related bodies.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the corporate trustee of the charity. Members of the Trust board and the charitable funds committee act as agents on behalf of the corporate trustee.

Our Trust board is also our charitable funds committee and is made up of the following members:

  • Lord Keith Bradley (chairman and chair of the Trust board)
  • Caroline Shaw (chief executive)
  • Roger Spencer (chief operating officer)
  • Anthony Blower (medical director)
  • Jackie Bird (director of nursing and quality)
  • Joanne Fitzpatrick (director of finance and business planning)
  • Jenni Murray (non-executive director)
  • Sir Duncan Nichol (non-executive director)
  • Lee Childs (non-executive director)
  • Barrie Bernstein (non-executive director)
  • Pat Loftus (non-executive director)

The charitable funds committee is responsible for the overall management of the charity, and is required, amongst other responsibilities, to:

  • Manage the investment of funds in accordance with the Trustees Act 2000.
  • Ensure that funding decisions are appropriate, consistent with our aims, and provide added value and benefit to patients and staff of the Trust, above those afforded by NHS funds.
