The Christie, the North West's specialist cancer centre is encouraging people to make a will, with the support of 50 law firms from across the region who will waive their usual fees next month in return for a donation to The Christie charity.
During The Christie charity's Make a Will Week, from the 14th-18th September 2015, participating solicitors will help people make or update a will for free, when usually it costs anything up to £150 for a basic will, or more for more complicated wills.
According to a recent survey by Remember a Charity, an increasing number of people in the UK now have a will, with more and more people choosing to leave a gift in their will to a charity. Legacies are worth an estimated £2.2billion to charities in the UK each year. Last year alone, The Christie received nearly£5million through the generosity of donors who left a gift in their will.
Charlotte Pisuto from Rowley Dickinson Solicitors in Manchester, one of the solicitors taking part in The Christie's Will Week, said: "Here at Rowley Dickinson, we have always participated in charitable events which give back to the community. We decided to become involved in helping to raise money for The Christie charity last year when sadly one of secretaries passed away following treatment at The Christie.
"The Make a Will Week scheme not only raises money for a good cause but it also encourages members of the public to make a will where perhaps they would not otherwise have done. It is important to have a will to ensure that when you die, you leave everything to the people that you want to benefit. This is particularly important for those who wish to benefit non family members or their partner where they are not married."
Legacy and research manager at The Christie charity, Ellen Hingley, said: "It's never too early to make a will and as life changes with getting married, having children, buying a house or retiring it often needs updating. Leaving a gift in your will, however big or small, to a cause close to the heart, makes a huge difference to charities. And it's easier than you think through The Christie charity's Make a Will Week.
"Make a Will Week is now in its sixth year and is firmly established in The Christie charity's calendar. The money raised through Make a Will Week makes a huge difference to our patients, helping to fund research, treatment and extra support services. 50 solicitors are kindly taking part in this year's Make a Will Week and we're extremely grateful to them for giving up their time and money for this important cause."
To get involved visit www.christiewillweek.orgfor a list of participating solicitors or you can contact Ellen Hingley, legacy and research manager on 0161 446 3178 or email email@example.com. The suggested minimum donation is £90 for a basic single will, £135 for a pair of basic 'mirror wills' which are ideal for couples, or £40 to update an existing will.
Solicitors will offer a free, standard will writing and updating service, and in return encourage donations to The Christie charity.
The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust through its fundraising activities, and delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS funds. The charity has over 30,000 supporters who helped raise £13.3m last year.
