Christie rallies against cancer this summer

Press release posted 09 May 2016

The Christie charity will be holding a Rally Against Cancer this summer as it joins forces with the Aegon Manchester Trophy international tennis event, taking place from 29th May to 5th June at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in Didsbury.

In the build up to, and during the Aegon Manchester Trophy, the Northern Lawn Tennis Club will be organising a range of exciting, fun tennis-related activities to help raise money for another iconic Manchester institution, The Christie.

Tickets are already on sale for the Aegon Manchester Trophy via https://www.lta.org.uk/aegonmanchestertrophy or call 0844 5816902.

Visitors to the Aegon Manchester Trophy will have the opportunity to take part in a range of fun tennis-related activities, including a fastest serve challenge. Rally Against Cancer participants will also be challenged to take part in a rally with one of the Northern Lawn Tennis Club’s team of professional coaches to see who can return the most tennis shots during a rally. Scores will be kept through the week, with the winner announced at the end of the tournament week.

The Northern Lawn Tennis Club has also invited more than 45 schools and tennis clubs throughout Manchester and North Cheshire to get involved and support The Christie through a range of Rally against Cancer activities during May including a sponsored tennis rally session using sponge balls.

Local junior tennis clubs will be asked to hold a charity tournament, barbecue or other fundraising activity to help raise money for The Christie. In return, participating clubs and schools will get up to 30 free tickets each to the Aegon Manchester Trophy international tennis event.

The Aegon Trophy International tennis at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club attracts a world class field of male players, most of whom will go on to compete at Wimbledon a few weeks later.

Aegon Manchester Trophy tournament director Richard Joyner said:

We are delighted to be working with The Christie charity to help raise money for this fantastic cause. Cancer has touched so many lives in tennis and in Manchester. Any money raised will go towards a new proton beam therapy research room which will help change lives.

The Christie charity’s community manager, Daniel Poole, added: “We are delighted to have been chosen by The Northern Lawn Tennis Club as the charity partner for the Aegon Manchester Trophy International tennis event this year. The club has lots of exciting and fun ideas to help raise much needed funds for our proton beam therapy research room. Proton beam therapy research will be vital in helping us to get the most out of this specialist treatment. We are very much looking forward to working with one of the biggest names in UK tennis to inspire young people to get involved in tennis whilst supporting our charity.”
