The Charity fundraising practices - July 2015

As a supporter of The Christie charity, you may have seen some coverage in the national media lately about charity fundraising practices.

We understand that these stories are unsettling so we want to reassure you that we take our integrity and responsibilities to our supporters very seriously. Fundraisers like you make a huge difference to the lives of our 44,000 patients each year.

We are deeply concerned about the fundraising practices adopted by some fundraising companies, on behalf of their charity clients.

We can reassure all our supporters that we do not do door-to-door canvassing or large cold calling campaigns and we do not knowingly target people who are vulnerable or have dementia. Furthermore, we do not work with disreputable external companies and have never worked with the fundraising companies GoGen or Listen Ltd.

We strictly abide by fundraising and data protection legislation and never sell or swap your details with third parties. We follow best practice and only hold information that is necessary to communicate with you. We will never call you at home, unless you have expressed an interest in our work. We also behave responsibly in the way we contact our regular direct mail supporters, avoiding sending mailings too often.

We are especially sensitive and careful when we speak to elderly or vulnerable supporters. Our policies and those of the agencies working on our behalf reflect this.

The Christie charity is a member of the Fundraising Standards Board and we are fully compliant with the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) guidelines. We already have a Fundraising Promise, which can be viewed at /the-christie-charity/about-us/our-fundraising-promise.aspx.

Our charity adopts a corporate trustee model, ensuing that we operate to the highest NHS standards of corporate ethics and governance, which provides further assurance to our supporters.

We will continue to ensure that we comply with any changes to charity fundraising practices made by the Government, The Charity Commission, the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) and the Fund Raising Standards Board (FRSB).

Our charity provides enhanced services over and above what the NHS is able to provide. Our supporters raised £15.9m last year, with 86p in the £1 going directly to our patients.

If you would like to find out more about how we store and use your information you can contact Zoe Viney-Griffiths on 0161 446 3650 or email appeals@christies.org.

Thank you so much for the support you give to The Christie and our patients.
