Abdominal sarcomas

Sarcomas are cancers that grow from soft tissue cells.

Common types include:

Leiomyosarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas

Which start in muscle cells.

Liposarcomas

Which arise from fatty tissue.

Angio sarcomas

Which arise from blood vessels

Gastro-intestinal stromal tumours (GIST)

Which arise in the digestive system.

Symptoms

In the case of abdominal sarcomas, this growth is often unnoticed. Initially any symptoms occur due to the direct pressure that these growths cause in the abdomen, but in time they can spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment

Surgery for these tumours at The Christie is undertaken by an experienced team of urologist, colorectal surgeons, and plastic surgeons. Other treatments can involve radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biological therapies.
