Clinical Placements

Hubs and Spokes

You will already be familiar with the terms 'hubs and spokes'.

The core aims of hubs and spokes placements is to give the students a broader experience, promote a comprehensive 'care pathway' approach to student learning, and create the opportunity to meet the European Union Directives, whilst maximising exposure to multidisciplinary team colleagues.

  • The hub will be the ward or department where your placement will be.
  • The spoke being all other departments connected to the hub and patient care. Each hub has a student notice board for all related information, including a list of possible spokes for that area.

It is not always necessary or possible for you to visit all the relevant spokes. Students should arrange their spokes with their mentor to ensure that spokes are relevant to the hub and realistic to the stage of training you are at.
