Tissue Biobank
In 2007, the Manchester Cancer Research Centre
Biobank was established to coordinate the collection of human
material from major cancer treatment centres across the Greater
Manchester area.
The centre allows clinical and preclinical researchers to
investigate new drug targets to see how certain cancer patients
will respond to different treatments. This initiative links cancer
surgeons, pathologists, oncologists, biohealth informaticians and
cancer researchers.
To ensure all cancer disease groups are targeted, the Biobank
collects samples from across the region at five collaborating
Trusts: The Christie, Salford Royal, University Hospital of South
Manchester, Central Manchester and Pennine Acute Hospitals Trusts.
The Biobank also collects blood and bone marrow samples from
patients with certain types of leukaemia and lymphoma.
Biobank provides an abundance of quality samples which
researchers can access with ease, and have been releasing samples
for cancer research since 2009. Biobank has approved over 20
projects to date.
