Manchester Academic Health Science Centre

The Greater Manchester region has a long and proud history of scientific achievement in health research. We now want to take the opportunity to build on this achievement through establishing a partnership which will develop Greater Manchester as a world leader for health research.

Our organisation is one of seven organisations joining forces to establish the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre  (Manchester AHSC).

The Manchester AHSC will be based on a federal model and the first Academic Health Science Centre in the UK to cover the full spectrum of care - acute, specialist, mental health, primary care and commissioning.

£100 million a year is currently invested in health research in Greater Manchester - but by co-ordinating and channelling our clinical and academic research strengths under one umbrella we will be able to secure more investment from industry, government and charitable bodies and rapidly develop our ambitions.

The vision of Manchester AHSC is that by 2013 we will have established a number of internationally competitive health research programmes together with a world class research infrastructure - and by 2020 Greater Manchester will have become one of the world's leading health research centres.

Manchester AHSC will initially run for five years, with the Dean of the Medical School as director and an independent Chair and Non-Executive Directors.

A federation, which interconnects our existing research activity and research partnerships, offers huge potential and opportunities - generating health benefits, economic development, enterprise, innovation and wealth creation in Greater Manchester and the North West.

The Manchester AHSC will bring a wide range of benefits which include:

  • Closer alignment and quicker translation of research into better practice
  • More patients accessing leading edge treatments and improved clinical outcomes
  • More streamlined decision-making and less administration
  • Better infrastructure: information, bio-banks, imaging, statistics
  • Superior opportunities for collaboration
  • Better staff recruitment and retention
  • More money for research, better value and higher world ranking
