Professional biography
Dr Allen trained at Manchester Medical School where he obtained his MBChB degree in 2006. He undertook specialist training in anaesthetics and critical care in the North West and Yorkshire Deaneries before taking up his consultant post at The Christie in 2016. His final year of training was focused on anaesthetising for major oncology cases including colorectal, hepato-pancreaticobiliary, upper GI, urology gynaecology, head and neck and plastic surgery.
During his training Dr Allen developed an interest in peri-operative medicine, in particular trying to improve or optimise patients’ physiology and medical problems prior to surgery. He has continued this at The Christie having developed an anaesthetic pre-operative assessment clinic and the development of a pre-operative anaemia service
Research Interest
Dr Allen has a long standing interest in peri-operative medicine and in particular pre-operative optimisation. He is involved in investigating whether improving patients’ physiological status can improve post-operative outcomes. This includes anaemia management and exercise training prior to surgery
