Radiogenomics: Assessment of Polymorphisms for Predicting the Effects of Radiotherapy

The main purpose of this study is to predict which cancer patients are most likely to develop radiation injuries as a result of their radiotherapy treatment. Once these individuals are able to be identified treatment can be specifically tailored for them.

The second aim is to investigate molecular pathways responsible for radiation-induced tissue damage.

The RAPPER Q sub-study

The RAPPER study includes a questionnaire based sub-study, called 'RAPPER-Q', which is based on patient symptom ('subjective') questionnaires used in RAPPER for patients with prostate and gynaecological cancers.

We are in the process of updating and improving the pelvic symptom questionnaire by rearranging the order of the questions and the format to improve the readability of the questionnaire. While the scoring method is well established we feel that in order for this symptom questionnaire to be used by patients in a routine clinical setting, the scoring needs to be simplified.

Consequently we have redesigned the questions so that they can be answered by all patients, and aim to improve the scoring using rasch analysis. We have already undertaken a separate phase 1 study by requesting 40 former patients to look at acceptability and inclusion of items with the new format questionnaire. By asking patients to complete items related to their symptoms on both formats of the questionnaire, we will be able to explore the efficacy of the new format.

We would like to ask future patients recruited to RAPPER to complete the new questionnaire alongside the existing questionnaire, pre-treatment, post treatment, 6 weeks and then annually.
