Press Release Posted 25 June 2015

Three teams at leading cancer centre, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, have been shortlisted for the prestigious Nursing Times 2015 Awards.

The teams have been named finalists in three categories; 'Cancer Nursing', 'HRH The Prince of Wales Award for Integrated Approaches to Care' and 'Nursing in the Community.'

The awards showcase the superb innovations that are shaping and improving nurse-led care in the NHS. They highlight how nurses are continuing to improve the treatment and care they provide for their patients.

The Trust's chemotherapy team was shortlisted for the 'Nursing in the Community' award for its work delivering more treatments closer to home for patients both in primary care centres and via a mobile chemotherapy unit. The team set a three year target to deliver 80% of chemotherapy treatments closer to home where appropriate. This target has been achieved.

The Christie's complementary health and wellbeing service has made it to the final of the 'HRH The Prince of Wales Award for Integrated Approaches to Care' category.

The team works with patients and carers on a range of issues and provide services including smoking cessation, alcohol advice, acupuncture, massage and a CALM service which helps patients with needle phobias, claustrophobia, and anxieties over medical procedures such as scans and biopsies.

The Herceptin* team at the Trust has been shortlisted in the 'Cancer Nursing' categoryfor a service which is completely co-ordinated and managed by a nurse team.

It is a unique service that allows patients to opt for treatments to be delivered not only at The Christie main site in Withington, but also in their own home, or at nine outreach units or five mobile unit locations.

Director of Nursing and Quality at The Christie, Jackie Bird, said: "We are absolutely delighted that three of our teams have made it to the finals of these prestigious awards. Competition is stiff and it is testament to the outstanding qualities of our staff that their hard work has been recognised in this way"

"This demonstrates the exceptional standard of nursing we provide at The Christie and how all our nurses, and the multi-disciplinary teams they work with, play such a vital role in the first class care given daily to our patients."

Finalists will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 12thNovember at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
