Supporting the development and national roll out of Advanced Care Planning in New Zealand

In 2012, The Christie School of Oncology was invited to work with the Auckland District Health Care Board and the New Zealand Advance Care Planning Cooperative to develop a training programme for health and social care staff to embed advanced care planning into New Zealand culture through developing a cohort of trainers and actors to deliver the training programme nationally.

During 2012 the initial training programme was developed and piloted and the first cohort of trainers and actors were recruited and trained to deliver the programme in the New Zealand’s north island.  In 2013-14 key staff returned to New Zealand to develop a sustainable model of Advanced Care Planning for the country, through training 2 more groups of facilitators and developing a NZ national clinical lead. This highly successful multi-disciplinary multi-professional programme now has national government backing and is being delivered in every region of both the north and south island of New Zealand.
